Jingle Bell Locks: How to Protect Your Home During the Holidays
The holiday season is one of the most wonderful times of the year, it is also the busiest and most distracting. With everyone out shopping for the perfect gifts and making plans to visit family and friends, the last thing on their minds is home security—which is good news for any Grinches looking to steal more than holiday spirit. November and December are at the height of crime season, especially for home invasions and theft. However, by taking the time to inspect and update your home security system now, you can help to avoid becoming a part of this ever-growing statistic.
Inspect Your Locks and Deadbolts
With the wear and tear that your home’s locks endure over time, it’s worth it to check their security every once in a while; especially around the holidays. Even if the lock itself is fine, it’s also important to check the stability of the door frame and strike plate. If either is compromised, it increases the ease of a potential break-in. Deadbolt locks should be able to shift effortlessly into their bolted position. They should never catch during the process of locking or unlocking. If they do, then it’s time to repair or replace them.
Secure Your Sliding Glass Door
As far as lock security goes, many people forget to take sliding glass doors into consideration. While most sliding glass doors have sturdy latches, it is actually the door tracks that should be inspected most often to ensure the stability of the each glass panel. If there is any space between the tracks and the door, even just enough for fingers to fit through, then it is possible for the door to be pried up and off of the track completely, allowing for a break in. Any gaps should be repaired immediately to prevent this.
Keep the Garage Door Closed
Having the garage door open for long periods of time not only leaves your car and other various belongings open and vulnerable, but it’s also an indication to thieves that the rest of the home may be unprotected. This is especially true for homes with attached garages as anyone can enter through the open garage to directly access the home, as if invited in by the owner. This is why it is incredibly important to keep your garage door closed at all times, even outside of the holiday season.
Be Sure to Set Your Alarm Every Night
Setting the alarm every night is a security measure that most people are already in the habit of doing, but since the holiday season is full of distractions and long to-do lists, it can be easy to forget to set the alarm before stepping out for the day. However, setting the alarm is imperative during the holiday season. Would-be thieves on the lookout for homes to target during the holidays will always try for ones that are unprotected. If you have an alarm system, always be sure to arm it before you leave the house and before you go to bed. Setting reminders on your phone may even help you stay consistent.
